Pallet racks are an efficient warehouse storage option for almost any inventory. One aspect of finding the best pallet racking system for you, is knowing what pallet rack sizes would work best with your inventory. Here are some things to keep in mind when figuring out which pallet rack sizes are appropriate for your project.
Pallet Size
The height, weight, and depth of the pallets you are using help determine which pallet rack sizes are available to use. This should be measured with your inventory on the pallet to ensure you are taking loading and unloading into consideration. This information will determine your minimum bay width and shelf level height.
Pallet Weight
Pallet weight is an important aspect of finding the perfect pallet rack size. The weight of the pallet with your inventory on it determines the rack capacity and spacing for each level. It’s always best to have a pallet rack system that is rated above the weight of your inventory to ensure safety in case of fluctuating weights.
Available Space
The available space in your warehouse is important, as well. Measure the space you have for your racking run(s). With this information, you can calculate the height, width, and depth of the racking you need as well as the number of pallets the racking will be able to store.
Common Pallet Rack Sizes
The standard pallet rack size is 48”d x 40”w. It is recommended to use a 42”deep upright to ensure the pallet has overhang in the front and back so the beam is supporting the weight of the pallet, and not the wire decking.
The beam size recommended, as long as there is not a lot of product overhang on the pallet, is 4’/8’/or 12’ wide. The weight of the pallet will determine the capacity of the beam required.
For example, if you have a 48”d x 40”w x 4’h pallet with a max weight of 2,500# and 23’ clear ceilings, we would recommend a 42”d x 16’h with 8’ x 4 ½” beams rated for 5,400#/pair. You would then have beam levels at 5’/10’/15’. This would put your top of product at 19’.
